Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) Synopsis :
Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) is investigating a seemingly unrelated series of crimes around Europe, believing them all connected to Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), a criminal mastermind just as smart as Holmes. After Moriarty arranges for another assassination, he poisons Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), as her feelings for Holmes have compromised her usefulness. Meanwhile, Holmes takes Dr. Watson (Jude Law) out with his brother Mycroft (Stephen Fry) for Watson's stag party, and saves another intended victim of Moriarty's, a fortune telling gypsy named Sim (Noomi Rapace). Holmes meets with Moriarty, who warns Holmes that if he persists in investigating him, Watson will become a target. Holmes stows away on the train taking Watson and his new wife Mary (Kelly Reilly) to their honeymoon destination, knocking Mary off the train to the safe hands of Mycroft while he and Watson battle Moriarty's men. When the duo arrive in France, Holmes tells Sim that Moriarty targeted her due to her brother Rene's work.......Goofs: Anachronisms: Though very photogenic, the C96, or "Broom handle," Mauser pistol, used extensively in this film, was first produced in 1896, thus would not have been available in 1891. Also, most models of C96s had a non-removable internal magazine, which would have been loaded from above with a stripper clip. It wasn't until the early 1930s that the C96 design would be modified to accept a removable magazine (conveniently loaded from the bottom, as pointed out in the film).

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) Review by dottyjyoung from United States
We just got back from the earliest showing we could get a sitter for. Ican say with confidence that my fears about this movie were totallyunfounded, and I now hold Guy Ritchie and these writers in the highestregard. Without going into spoilers, here are the three concerns thatwere put entirely to rest: 1) After seeing the trailer, my biggestworry was the use of "bullet-time" type photography during aVictorian-era movie. I thought it would be completely anachronistic andpointless. However, they'd already established in this movie and theprevious one that Holmes is hyper-aware of his surroundings. Thebullet-time was used to convey how traumatic a couple of scenes were tosomeone with that type of awareness, and it worked beautifully.
2) Jared Harris looked so vanilla and soft in the promo pics andtrailers that I couldn't imagine him as a fearsome adversary forHolmes. However, his Moriarty is so devious and cunning, and at onetime downright sadistic, that I don't think they could have made abetter choice. A couple of times I felt like he was channeling hisfather (the outstanding Richard Harris) without the warmth and empathythat the late actor conveyed. Can you imagine Richard Harris as acunning, calculating perfectionist that's totally devoid of concern forhuman life? You won't have to after watching his son. It's freaky. Andhe sings.
3) Holmes' relationship with Watson (and in a small way, Irene Adler)is fantastically developed. Saying any more than that would be toospoilery.
So, watching this w/ my husband(who is a die-hard Sherlock fan, andused to read Sherlock Holmes aloud to me every rainy night, complete w/voices) was a fabulous experience. We can't wait to see it again, andown it.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) Review by picklechann from United States
This movie was absolutely fantastic. I have been waiting for it forwhat feels like forever now and it truly did not disappoint. Thestoryline was clever, the dynamic between Watson and Holmes wascharming and beautiful, and the effects were incredible. Honestly, asmuch of a fan I am of the first movie, its sequel surpassed it and myoverall expectation. Some the effects were unnecessary at times, but Ireally enjoy the style in which these movies are edited. It can beslightly confusing periodically, another reason to rewatch, still payattention closely. Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr.'s chemistry wascompelling and the supporting actors were on par. I laughed, I nearlyscreamed, and I even cried. Game of Shadows is gripping, exciting, hilarious, and even draws tears. You'll be cheering throughout andsatisfied with the end. Too be honest, it is absolutely one of the bestmovies of this year.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) Review by John DeSando (jdesando@columbus.rr.com) from Columbus, Ohio
Professor Moriarty: Are you sure you want to play this game? SherlockHolmes: I'm afraid you'd lose.
In Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, my mind turns two ways: Thefirst half is guns, gunpowder, and gymnastics. Sherlock Holmes (RobertDowney, Jr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law) contend with the salvation ofcivilization mostly through athletics, aided by director Guy Ritchie'sconsiderable skill with the camera and graphics.
But in the second half, when the duo moves swiftly but intellectuallyto confront the arch villain Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris),my mind is at equilibrium, renewing my love of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle'soriginal brainy, eccentric sleuth. The chess game is a marvel ofstrategy, replete with revenge, intrigue, and just plain ingenuity.Director Guy Ritchie's visuals include delightful Downey disguises andlively speed ramping in a forest bombarded by bullets. Hans Zimmer'smusic leans heavily on the fiddle to lighten the load of a difficultplot.
Watson's marriage, rather than taking away from the bromance, addsunexpected color and creativity. So Ritchie has ramped up theintellectual content and at least balanced it with the athletic, whichwas a strength of his 2009 version, Sherlock Holmes. With InspectorLastrade just a memory and Holmes's love, Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams),appearing briefly, we are left to enjoy not so much the interaction ofHolmes and Watson but the explosiveness of Holmes and Moriarty.
After a first half of explosions, the second half satisfiestraditionalists like me for the chess game of life and deathand that'sthe suspenseful fate of the world in those pieces. Director Guy Ritchiehas improved on his 2009 version.
