Monte Carlo (2011) Synopsis :
The film begins with 18-year old Grace Ann Bennett (Selena Gomez) working at a diner with her best friend, Emma Danielle Perkins (Katie Cassidy), a high school dropout. Grace adds another pinch of change to her jar marked Graces Fund for Paris. At graduation, the valedictorian is speaking when Meg Kelly-Bennett (Leighton Meester), Graces uptight older stepsister, comes in late. Everybody turns to look, embarrassing Meg. That night, at dinner, Graces stepdad (Brett Cullen) announces that he has paid for all the girls to go on a trip to France. Meg, who does not want to go with the girls, refuses. She states that all her life she wanted to be friends with Emma Perkins, and now shes stuck on going on a soon-to-be-disastrous trip.
The trip proves to be horrible, as they have been ripped off for a small suite and have a small amount of time to visit so many places. They get left behind by their tour guide and trudge through the streets as it rains, seeking coverage in a posh hotel.

Monte Carlo (2011) Review by FourInTheFamily from United States
Monte Carlo is a charming movie for tweens and/or teens. Several otherreviewers disliked the movie calling it predictable and boring but Ihave to vehemently disagree. If you are looking for a cute, adventurousmovie with NO SWEARING, NO NUDITY, NO SEXUAL SCENES or INNUENDOS, NOSMOKING, and NO DRUGS then this is the movie for you (and us!)! Thismovie reminds me of some of the 1960's Disney movies that wereplot-wise too old for little kids but still 'safe' for the not quiteteenagers.
This is a classic movie about mistaken identity and learning to getalong. The 3 main characters in the movies are all very differentpersonalities but they grow and learn to accept each other by the endof the movie. They also have very different 'happy endings' but seeinghow different they are, the characters should end happily-ever-afterdifferently.
There are some funny moments, some thinking 'would I do that?' moments, and some 'good for her' moments. You genuinely like each of thesecharacters (except the mean girl) by the end of the show whether youliked them at the beginning or not.
This movie is perfect for its target audience of tweens/early teens andI wish more movies like this were available with today's stars!
Monte Carlo (2011) Review by ThatsWhatTheyTellMe from Canada
Selena Gomez stars as an optimistic teen from Texas in thiscomedy...now I use the word comedy loosely since unless you're underthe age of twelve, it's doubtful that you'll ever physically laughwhile viewing this film. Gomez's Grace has been saving pennies foryears while working a thankless waiting job and attending her highschool classes. Finally a graduate, she and her best friend, Emma, played by the strikingly beautiful Katie Cassidy, are off to Paris fora vacation of a lifetime. But no fairy-tale is complete without theunwanted stepsister tagging alone, this time portrayed by LeightonMeester.
In what could have offered some comedic moments but somehow failed to,the girls realize their tour of Paris just doesn't live up toexpectations. Add that with the fact Grace and Emma aren't exactly fondof Grace's uptight stepsister, the vacation is a nightmare to thegirls. Luckily, this is where the magic comes in and it is discoveredthat Grace has an identical look-alike who happens to stroll into thehotel where the girls are. Add some cheesy contrivances and a fewunbelievable plot twists and bam! The girls find themselves on aprivate jet to Monte Carlo, where Grace will be posing as her snottydoppleganger Cordelia.
The girls then go into romantic individual story lines, each one moredull and pointless than the next. Grace's romance with French socialiteTheo evolves at a rapid and completely unrelatable pace. He literallydislikes her one second and then decides that because she likes horsesthat she's "different" and the one for him. They briefly check out somefireworks and fall for each other without exchanging so much as ane-mail address. Emma must decide between a snooty guy she meets whorarely speaks and is played by an unknown actor or her sweet Texanboyfriend played by popular Glee heartthrob Cory Monteith. Gee, Iwonder who she will choose in the end? The most intriguing relationshipas far as romance goes to Meg and Riley. Riley is a forward Australianmate who manages to open up Meg's hard exterior and help her come toterms with her mother's passing while they fall for each other. Theirromance has a slight adventurous quality to it that's somewhatredeemable.
The thing about Monte Carlo is that while it's not horrificallyoffensive, it's hardly passable for entertainment. It's dull, long, boring, and stretched out over practically two hours in a simple andcheesy story that could've been handled in 90 minutes. Gomez, who has agreat sense of comedic timing and charisma that she showcases on herpoorly written Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, won meover on a show that's just not good, so it's unfortunate that she hasyet to find a film that will truly utilize her skills and allow her toshowcase her true star potential to the world. Hopefully she'll begiven further chances after this failure. Leighton and Katie are alsovery likable in their roles, but the film's weak script and lack ofcomedy can't save this dull film. Despite all of the above, the sceneryis gorgeous and the three young actresses are not to blame for thispoor excuse for a romantic comedy. Especially when there are greatfamily films out there featuring female leads that cover all age-groupssuch as Disney's Tangled.
Monte Carlo (2011) Review by e-sterr from Netherlands
I almost didn't watch the movie because I saw the reviews of othershere on IMDb. In the end I decided to try it anyway and was pleasantlysurprised. Sure, the story has been done before, and in the end it maynot be the most realistic, but that's not why you should want to watchthis movie anyway. It's a happy, feel-good movie about following yourdreams that, when you finish watching it, leaves you with a smile onyour face. I recommend this to anyone with a bit of extra time who justwants to watch a relaxing, cheerful movie like me (a 21 year old girlXD) or for anyone who wants a nice, clean movie to watch for or withtheir children. Enjoy!
