Cloud Atlas (2012) Synopsis :

This film follows the stories of six people's "souls" across time, and the stories are interweaved as they advance, showing how they all interact. It is about how the peoples' lives are connected with and influence each other.

The first storyline follows a lawyer named Adam Ewing (Jim Sturgess) in the early 1800's, whose family is in the slave trade. He has been sent to the Pacific to arrange a contract for some Maori slaves with a slave trader from that area. During his return voyage home, Ewing saves the life of a Maori (native New Zealander) man named Autua (David Gyasi) who is a runaway slave stowing away on the ship. Ewing also realizes he is being poisoned by a doctor he trusted, Dr. Henry Goose (Tom Hanks), who is robbing Ewing as he gets sicker and sicker. Autua saves Ewing's life and his views of the natives are changed in important ways as he comes to know the man. Adam Ewing's journal, which chronicled his ordeal and rescue by a runaway slave, are later published into a book wh.......

Goofs: Incorrectly regarded as goofs: There are no known habitable planets from which Earth would be visible in the night sky. However, this storyline is set hundreds of years in the future, by which time a good deal of technology may exist. The "planet" in the final scene could be an asteroid or other fairly large celestial body on which Terra-forming technology is used.

Plot: An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. Full summary »  »

Story: Everything is connected: an 1849 diary of an ocean voyage across the Pacific; letters from a composer to his friend; a thriller about a murder at a nuclear power plant; a farce about a publisher in a nursing home; a rebellious clone in futuristic Korea; and the tale of a tribe living in post-apocalyptic Hawaii, far in the future. Cloud Atlas (2012) Review by Christian Lotz from United States
There can be little doubt that Cloud Atlas will become a classic thatwill be watched over and over again by its devoted followers, just likeits predecessors by Stanley Kubrick and Ridley Scott. Despite the manyquestions I had in my mind when I left the theater and the momentsduring the film when I felt disappointed or confused, I knew this, andI have not stopped thinking about the movie and longing to be back infront of the screen.

It is easy to criticize this movie as some have done for being overlyambitious, pandering to low taste, being too simple or too complex, with too few actors or too many, or even for celebrating revengeviolence against professional critics who write negative reviews. Theymay all be correct, but these critics will still put themselves in thesame category as those that warned audiences against 2001 or BladeRunner. The truth is that Cloud Atlas is profound in its reach, itsvisual and acoustic impact, its mesmerizing flow and its completelyground-breaking storytelling, and movie goers will see it and feel itin their guts.

It is a movie that is a product of our age of internet-driven universalknowledge and vision, and the freedom we have to travel the world andjump between ages, genres, images and identities at our will. Itreminds us that we are human and that we can still hear our heart beat,if we listen.

Cloud Atlas (2012) Review by torontodog from Toronto
Kudos to all the filmmakers for adapting this famously "unfilmable"novel in such an inventive way. There are SIX separate timelines thatswitch after every scene, but instead of the plot, the narrativecontinuity follows the theme of the film. Once you clue in to thatoverall theme, it is no longer confusing when the story jumps from arunaway slave in the 1800s to a post apocalyptic future battle betweensome of the last humans remaining on earth.

All this audacious style and structure makes Cloud Atlas a curiosity tosay the least, but the film is lifted to the realm of "Masterpiece" bythe all-star ensemble cast. This impressive collection of actors firesoff amazing performances like the Expendables 2 fires off high caliberbullets. I mean this will long be considered one of the greatest actingclinics ever filmed, and a high point in some already outstandingcareers, as the end credits alone are astonishing to watch.

Overall this is a movie that transcends the simple elements of starsand plots and special effects, and boldly assumes to take the cinema toanother level of storytelling, much like Avatar took film to a newlevel of technology a few years ago. The ambition, the technicalbrilliance and the passion that was put into this film makes it one ofthe great epics of our time.

Cloud Atlas (2012) Review by zapata_36 from Canada
I didn't find it to be a mess at all, and it was certainly the bestthing the Wachowskis have ever done. I'm not sure how the directingduties were distributed, so I'll uniformly praise Tom Tykwer as well.

I haven't read the book, so I can't make any comparisons there, but Idon't often leave a film adaptation wanting to read the novelafterwards, as I did after seeing this.

Visually stunning, epic in scope, a strong score; the sort of film thatyou're constantly amazed was ever made and happy it was. Equal partscomedy, romance, thriller, and dystopian speculative fiction, it reallyis an astounding mix of disparate elements.

The biggest overall failure was definitely some of the make-up effects- trying to turn Doona Bae into a believable red-headed Caucasian womanwas simply distracting - but the overall art & sound design wasincredible.

If I could turn channels while watching TV and switch between storiesand narratives as seamlessly and as deftly as the editing in CloudAtlas, it would honestly be hard to go back to simply watching one showat a time.

Truly a marvel of multitasking on so many levels. Great stuff.
