Here (2011) Review by chrismsawin from United States
What initially attracted me to Here was Ben Foster being involved. Iremember watching "Flash Forward" when I was in seventh grade and eventhough I can't remember much about the series, it must've made along-lasting impression on me because I've followed Foster's actingcareer fairly closely ever since. But Here was a bit of a gamble sinceI wasn't familiar with anyone else in the cast (even though LubnaAzabal was also in Coriolanus, which I saw earlier the same evening)and Braden King was a director I was completely unfamiliar with. In theend, Here isn't exactly a film that demands to be seen but is stillable to pique your interest at times if you find yourself watching it.

Will Shepard (Foster) is a cartographer who currently finds himself inArmenia. He drives all over the country for his work and eventuallycrosses paths with a photographer named Gadarine (Azabal). They feelconnected to one another right from the start and eventually starttraveling together. A relationship of sorts develops and while the twoof them thoroughly enjoy the company of one another life steps in totake them in opposite directions. Both Will and Gadarine findthemselves at a crossroads and must decide where to go from Here.

Here is full of some absolutely breathtaking scenery. It was actuallyshot on location in Armenia and the country is almost overly-beautiful.Everything is so lush and green. It's almost overwhelming. You'll alsonotice the film's prominent use of long shots. Most of them take placein the middle of nowhere, are roaming shots, and usually slowly rotatein a nearly 360 degree angle. It gives you this sense of what's goingon in this world around the actors rather than what's just transpiringduring their story.

The most intriguing aspect of Here is that every so often it takes atime out from telling Will and Gabadine's story while a narrator stepsin (Peter Coyote) and talks over some rather abstract visuals thatinclude shots of nature and city life. The narrated scenes are writtenreally well and it just took me back to the more abstract animatedshorts that Chuck Jones did (Now Hear This, The Dot and the Line) backin the sixties. The Tree of Life almost comes to mind, but Here doesn'thave half a dozen story lines competing for your attention and doesn'tfeel nearly as pretentious as The Tree of Life did. Into the Wild isprobably the most obvious comparison, but I was left thinking of aJoseph Gordon-Levitt film not many people saw called Uncertainty. Thefilms aren't even all that similar, but both films take something likea character study and make it more important than the actual storyline.

Here is a pretty unique experience. It's not the typical type of filmthat acts like it demands your attention, but is a journey you won'tregret taking when it's over. Conceptual ideas are interjected amongsta blossoming and intimate love story. Everything the story stands forrides on the last few precious moments of the film, which takessomething so simple and gives this incredible meaning to it. Here comesoff as more of a traveling journal or moving photo album rather thanthe typical story driven cinematic fare.

Here (2011) Review by gradyharp from United States
HERE is not likely to be a phenomenal box office hit - nor does it seemto be intended for that. This extended (126 minutes) visual, poetic, philosophical experience is more an unwinding meditation about thebeauty of Armenia and the crisscrossing of two lives of people whohappen to encounter each other and find more definition of their owndirection through a slowly developing love story. The film's openingmoments are visually blinks of light and color and barely recognizablelandscape as background to some lovely philosophical commentary made byoff screen Peter Coyote. It plays like an overture to the story thatlies ahead.

Will Shepard (Ben Foster) is an American satellite-mapping cartographerwho has been assigned a location in Armenia to adjust the satelliteimages of this country. He speaks no Armenian and while attempting toorder food in a café he is aided by a girl Gadarine Nazarian (LubnaAzabal) who provides translation. Gadarine is a photographer who spendsher time on the road, away from her elderly parents and brother, takingartistic photographs: she has had a successful show of her work inParis. Will and Gadarine chat momentarily but more importantly theyconnect with a mutually felt magnetism. Coincidences bring themtogether to travel as Gadarine photographs the countryside and villagepeople and Will works on his meticulous mapping techniques. Theirrelationship develops into one of passion and filling each other'sneeds, but at the same time their coming together defines where each ofthese unique people find their life direction. How the couple close thefilm is too special to share in a review.

The true star of this film is the cinematographer Lol Crowley who withdirector and writer Braden King layout the most mysteriously beautifullandscape images: at times there is no dialogue to interfere with thesheer eloquence of the images of Armenian countryside. The musicalscore is minimal - by Boxhead Ensemble - and that adds to themeditative aspect of the film. Yes, there are scenes where Will andGadarine interact with other characters and these are sensitivediversions. But basically this is an extended melancholic road trip, taken at a deliberately slow pace to allow the audience to discover theHERE with Will and Gadarine. It seems even longer than its excessiveover-two hour length, but at the same time it is a film that refreshesthe mind from all the noise and madness of the other current films.Recommended for those who appreciate experimental filmmaking.

Here (2011) Review by smfilm from United States
Here is different in many ways. Too many to really outline in areview... and different and great in one spot is really really hard tofind in cinema these days...

I would say that it is a very refreshing, meditative work of art forthose of us who seek more in life. If you are into self awareness andphilosophy in life and can open up to it, Here will take you on ajourney that is very interesting in a unique way.

A lot of films over the decades have attempted this, in spite of thevirtual business suicide that they are, but Here presents it in acontemporary, realist, utilitarian view that is so new.

Ben Foster and Lubna Azabal are two very good actors who get to shinein subtlety... I really wish Ben got more big roles and especially thatLubna was better represented in American / English speaking roles....

Braden King struggled to make this and from looking at the website didsome unusual fundraising to get it over the finish line.... he ended upwith something well worth your time, I hope it gets some recognitionfor the top flight, non standard fare it is....
