Das Haus der Krokodile (2012) Synopsis :
Victor is both thrilled and mystified when his family moves into his grand-uncles somber mansion filled with African masks, taxidermy crocodile mounts - and a dark secret: Four decades ago, his grand-cousin Cecilia, at the same age as he is now, lost her life in the mansions impressive staircase, and the circumstances of her death still remain obscure.Alone with his teenage sisters while his parents are travelling, Victor plays with his sword in front of the big mirror in the parlor - and is appalled when he sees the reflection of a masked man! A burglar? But how could he have gotten into the house when all doors were locked from inside? Mrs. Debisch, the gruff, elderly housekeeper, thinks it was just Victor's imagination running riot. Or is she trying to draw a veil over the truth?
With his detective instinct kindled, he finds Cecilia's diary in a secret drawer of his grand-uncles desk. Her wax crayon drawings send shivers down his spine: He sees a little girl haunted throughout the mans.......

Das Haus der Krokodile (2012) Review by Geschichtenerzaehler from Germany
Victor is a clever young boy. His family recently moved into the oldhouse of their uncle, but he still has to adapt to the strange newenvironment. His parents have to leave to attend a trade show while hestays behind with his older sisters.
Triggered by a disturbing encounter, Victor comes across a 40 year oldmystery. A girl named Cäcilie died in the same house under unknowncircumstances. She had a secret and Victor becomes obsessed withsolving it. But following her pointers is hard, if not dangerous underthe eyes of the houses other suspicious inhabitants...
To come to a fair judgment of this movie, you have to keep in mind,that it was made for a younger audience. It's only slightly creepy incomparison to mystery thrillers for grown ups, but there's enoughtension and mystery to keep you well entertained from the start to thefinale.
Luckily the tone is not goofy, a trap many children's movies fall into.In fact I have little complains at all.
The script is well thought out. There are only a few moments,especially those where Victor tries to explain his observations toadults, that could have been better. I think he should be smart enoughto know, how unbelievable his findings are, and he has to back them upwith evidence, before anybody will believe him.
The young lead actor is able to shoulder the entire movie, which isquite remarkable. I gotta say the entire cast does a great job.
The atmosphere is quite tense for the most time and is created withcool, sometimes stunning sets (behold that stairwell) and a score thatcaptures the mood perfectly.
Very good, not only for kids!
